Grape Stampede 2016 5K & 10K Walk/Run, & 5K Kids Fun Run

Support the Soledad Mission Fiesta October 2, 2016

The Grape Stampede is cancelled for 2016 due to the Sobranes Fire in the area.

The air quality has been extremely poor in the morning and hours and afternoons this week. Predicting the weather in 10 days is not exact so there is no way to plan for wind patterns. More importantly there is no way to predict the fire activity during the next 10 days. The health of our participants comes first, for the Recreation District and it is with a heavy heart we decided to cancel the event this year.

I spoke with the Public Information Officer for the firefighting agencies. They are switching crews at the end of this week and another team will be coming in behind them. Back burning continues which is the cause of most of the smoke this week, however the interior fire is still burning, and at 60% containment. There are more areas still needing back burning in Arroyo Seco, so that could cause more smoke.

I spoke with the Monterey Air Pollution District who monitors air quality, and they were unable to predict wind patterns on October 2, and could not predict air quality on that day. They did discuss the air quality being worse during morning hours (when our run is scheduled) and afternoon winds shifting smoke and ash, either away or towards us.

The Mission board is very sad we had to come to this decision but will still be holding their wonderful community event and we hope you will still consider stopping by.

We are working with Active.com to issue refunds for those who have registered.

The Soledad Mission Fiesta Rib BBQ, Grape Stomp, wine tasting, live music, auction, and community event will still happen and we encourage all to attend it is such a great event.

Your health and well being comes first for the Recreation District and all our partners. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you at the event October 2, and at our 2017 Grape Stampede. Your support allows us to be successful in providing recreation opportunities in Soledad and Greenfield.

2015 was our first year hosting music in the park. The local performers were so amazing donating their time to start this hopefully annual tradition. Henry Tavarez worked so hard to seek out and schedule diverse and local talent. Music in the Park is free to attend, is always in search of sponsorship, and is a fun way for our community to support the Rec District and local artists.

We are looking forward to 2016. Please contact us if you are interested in performing, sponsorship, putting on a fundraising food booth (non-profits only), or a local artisan or crafter looking to sell your art.
